Welcome and Orientation to the Course

  1. Review the Moodle course site. Read ALL all of the Course Materials on the home page (Syllabus, Course Schedule, Software & Hardware Requirements, Course Policies, and AECT Course Standards)
  2. Use Moodle's email feature to send a test email to your instructor.
  3. Review the text for this class.
  4. Introduce yourself in the Theoretical Foundations of Educational Technology discussion forum.
  5. Update your profile in Moodle.

September 7 is Labor Day holiday. University offices are closed.

Module 1: Educational Technology - Introduction to the Field

  1. Read and view materials provided on historical, societal, and critical issues in Educational Technology.
  2. Access and add resources to the class wiki.
  3. Develop a definition of Educational Technology.
  4. Optional: Add additional terms and definitions to the class glossary.
  5. Add a contribution to the historical timeline for Educational Technology developments.
  6. Join CiteULike (optional).
  7. Participate in ongoing discussions and sign up to lead a discussion.
  8. Submit summary of Module 1 assignments and reflect on the readings and your current teaching practice.

Module 2: Epistemology, Theoretical Schools, and Theories of Learning
  1. Read and view materials provided on epistemology and major theories of learning.
  2. Read Chapters 1 and 2 of the class text.
  3. Complete the Theories of Learning Writing Activity and Peer Review process. Draft submission no later than Tuesday, September 22. Peer review no later than Friday, September 25. Upload your final paper as a Word or .rtf file, by clicking on the link to Learning Theories Writing Activity located in Module 2. (You will also submit a copy with peer reviewer feedback either as a link to your Google Doc or as an uploaded file.)
  4. Refine the definition of Epistemology in the class glossary, add information about your chosen theory to the historical timeline OR add resources to the class wiki.
  5. Lead a discussion/participate in ongoing discussions.
  6. Submit summary of Module 2 assignments and reflect on epistomology.

6, 7 & 8 9/30 - 10/20 Module 3:  Connecting the Dots - Theories of Educational Technology
  1. Read and view materials provided on theories of educational technology.
  2. Read Chapter 3 and one additional chapter of the class text.
  3. Complete the Lesson Plan Activity. Please post your completed assignment to the MAIN Discussion Forum AND submit to the the Submit Lesson Plan Activity area in the Module 3 activities for grading by Tuesday October 6.
  4. Add a definition to the class glossary, Add information about one or more theories of educational technology to the historical timeline. OR add resources to the class wiki by Tuesday October 20.
  5. Create an annotated bibliography and add your contribution to the class wiki using Google Docs AND submit to the Submit Annotated Bibliography area in the Module 3 activities for grading Tuesday October 20.
  6. Submit discussion idea and/or lead a discussion.
  7. Lead a discussion and/or participate in ongoing discussions.
  8. Submit summary of Module 3 assignments and reflect on the readings and your current teaching practice by Tuesday October 20.

9, 10  & 11 10/21 - 11/10 Module 4: Looking Ahead - Emerging Theories and Strategies
  1. Post your text chapter summary in the appropriate thread of the Module 4: Jigsaw Activity Discussion Forum, located in the Module 4 activities area by Tuesday, October 27.
  2. Reach consensus on a common set of key points from your chapter and post to the Module 4: Chapter Summaries thread in the MAIN discussion forum by Tuesday, November 3.
  3. Add a definition to the class glossary, add information about one or more contemporary theories of educational technology to the historical timeline OR add resources to the class wiki.
  4. Update Annotated Bibliography with 3 - 5 resources related to emerging theories and technologies.
  5. Lead a discussion and/or participate in ongoing discussions.
  6. Submit a first draft of your paper with selected research to the Submit First Draft of Synthesis Paper area in the Module 4 activities by Tuesday, November 10.
  7. Submit summary of Module 4 assignments and reflect connections among emerging technologies, learning theories, and theories of educational technology.

Module 5: Full Circle - Theories of  Educational Technology
  1. Revised draft for final peer review.
  2. Lead a discussion and/or participate in ongoing discussions.

  1. Contact your peer reviewer and share your Google doc with him/her to review no later than Tuesday, December 1.
  2. Complete your peer-review of a classmate's paper no later than Saturday, December 5. Use the Synthesis Paper Rubric to guide your work in writing and assessing papers submitted by your peers.
  3. In your Module 5 Summary and Reflection please submit your 10 best discussion forum posts (100 pts). You may post a final reflection for the course if you like - but this is optional.

FINAL SYNTHESIS PAPER DUE DATE: Thursday, December 10
